...but you'll see why.

In 2004, I had just come home from my church mission, excited about my new chapter in life, when I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. It came after months of doctors appointments, all of which were focused on my eyes, and why I was suddenly legally blind. Through an MRI we learned it wasn't my eyes, but my nerves.

It's been an interesting path, since. I've learned to embrace this disease and allow it to remind me how precious and fragile our bodies are, and to treat mine with love and respect. When I get migraines, lose my balance, have severe fatigue, feel my limbs tingling or watch my world get blurry, I know it's time to take a step back, to de-stress, and take a moment to take care of me. I've learned MS can be a great excuse when my brother asks me to mow the lawn or watch his dog. "But Adrian, I have MS." ...kidding, (sorta).  I've learned the importance of saving money for medical needs, the importance of exercise and a good diet, and also, the importance of not letting a disease control your life. (I know that is easier said than done for many, I feel very blessed for what I am able to do, and I am also so grateful for modern medicine).  I've also learned the importance of organizations that help in getting us the care we need. I was able to get an MRI 2 years ago as a routine check-up because the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation helped with the cost. The MS Foundation also helps in research for a cure, and resources for those suffering. I am not insurable while I am unemployed, and for many people with MS, that is often the case. The foundation helps those who have no other options.

Since I was diagnosed in 2004, my childhood friend, Abby Ferrell, from Virgina rides her bike 150 miles each year to raise money to help in the cure. It's that time of year again, and she is riding. She's asked me to pass this on, and I hope that if you have even 5 dollars, you will help in her goal, and in mine.

This is what she wrote on her personal page:

Why I Ride
I ride because 24 years ago a little girl came up to me on our first day of kindergarten offering friendship.  Little did I know then that it would turn into a friendship of a lifetime.  Lauren was as strong-willed at 5 years old as she is now and that will keeps her tenacity to beat MS at the forefront of her actions.  Her will not only serves for her fight against MS but it presses her to live life with such an infectious zest.  Her love for experiencing life has taken her around the globe and to "all 50 states before" she turned 30.  It has made her an iron-clad keeper of her family; all of whom she gladly and honorably puts before herself.  She has worked for charities such as the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the United Way and has raised money for others with serious illnesses.  That is just one small example of how she seems to forget about herself to help other people.  We would all be so lucky to take a page out of Lauren's book.  I'm honored to call her my best friend and grateful for the woman she has become.
